Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation Foundation is Crowned Worst Charity in America

expenses The Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation, based in Schererville, Indiana, has been caught spending large sums of cash on for-profit solicitation companies.

The foundation was founded in 2007 and is currently run by Michael Slutsky. According to the origination’s website, it strives to educate the public regarding autism and to provide families and community organizations with financial assistance, tools and educational material to help detect and treat autism. It also provides scholarships for autistic children to attend “social skills” camp, sends holiday gift cards to families with children with autism, and gives Early Detection Kits to agencies that work with infants, toddlers and preschool children.

According to an investigative report by The Tampa Bay Times and The Center for Investigative Reporting, this “charity” raised over $7.6 million between 2009 and 2011, but over 90 percent of those funds were used to pay donation-solicitation companies  that were hired by the charity. The total amount paid for professional solicitation campaigns was found to be a whopping $7 million, with only $2.3 million spent on programs. Of the $7.6 million raised by solicitors, less than 3 percent has been spent on direct cash aid.

As a result of overspending donations on professional solicitor campaigns, the Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation ranks highest on the Times/CIR’s list of America’s worst charities, followed by the Cancer Fund of America, the American Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Breast Cancer Relief Foundation. The Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation did not initially make the list of the top five work charities in America due to the charity understating their fundraising totals on IRS forms.
