Tybee Island, Ga. — Coastal Empire Surfers for Autism Beach Festival occurred again on September 12th in Tybee.

Surfers for Autism is an organization formed way back in 2008 by a group of surfers from Deerfield Beach in Florida, who wanted to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder have fun by surfing.

Aside from Tybee, the group also takes the Coastal Empire Surfers for Autism Beach Festival to different coastal towns in Florida as well as Australia — and each time, the events would be packed with eager participants, volunteers, as well as families caring for individuals with autism.

The event this year in Tybee alone were maxed with over 200 participants and had a long list of hopefuls waiting for a chance to join.

According to Surfers for Autism member Kristine Bamman, who has two children with the Surfers for Autism:

“Surfers for Autism gives them the chance to be rock stars for a day to interact with typical peers and wow families with their capabilities. We also register up to 350 volunteers to help make the magic happen.

She further adds that many local businesses support the events with interactive events and exhibitions.  Local restaurants also provided free lunch for every participants and their families as well as for volunteers.

The first-ever Surfers for Autism event in Tybee was held back in 2005. According to Bamman:

“Ever since then, we have held our event on the Saturday after Labor Day. Thus allowing the majority of Tybee’s summer crowd to head home and clear the surf for this special day.
