Columbus, Ohio — The Ohio House Committee on Community and Family Advancement voted in favor of a bill that bans abortion of unborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome.

The Ohio state legislative committee voted 9-3, with bipartisan support, in favor of the bill making the state the second in the U.S. to make abortion of children based on the diagnosis illegal.

Pro-life advocates in Ohio were happy about the congress’ decision. According to Ohio Right to Life Executive Director Stephanie Ranade Krider:

“With these committee hearings, Ohioans have had the opportunity to define what kind of state we want to be: one that accommodates difference and protects every person’s right to life.”

Ohio Right to Life’s Down syndrome Non-Discrimination Act (H.B. 135) was sponsored in the congress by Representatives David Hall and Sarah LaTourette, after studies found that about 70 to 90 percent of unborn babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome are aborted after their mothers are told about the diagnosis. According to Rep. LaTourette:

I am proud to introduce legislation that will end this horrific form of discrimination. This is a small step in ensuring the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all individuals – not just the ‘perfect’ or the born.”
