Barnet, North Finchley UK – The Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Melvin Cohen, officially open Origin Housing’s Speedwell Court in Woodside Grange Road this week.
The new development is for adults diagnosed with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. The building had originally been a retirement home but was adapted to meet the needs of Autistic individuals.
Natalie O’Neill reports in Times that Origin worked closely with Your Choice Barnet Autism’s service manager. The lighting, colour schemes and design have all been chosen to create calming and comforting environment to those individuals on the Autistic Spectrum.
The development comprises of ten studio apartments and 24 hour care is provided on site.
Cllr Cohen is quoted as saying:
“We have a shortage of accommodation for people with autism and Asperger’s syndrome in Barnet, so I salute Origin Housing for creating this scheme.”
Councillor Sachin Rajput, cabinet member for adults said that the development would allow and give the chance for Autistic adults to live independently but that support was there if they needed it.
“This will ultimately give its residents the skills and confidence they need to live independently in the future.”
