New Orleans — A study conducted by a group of researchers suggests that the rapidly increasing number of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the US may be linked to high-fructose corn syrup intake.
The study noted that high-fructose corn syrup or HCFS can be found in nearly every processed good available in the market, including processed meat and beverages.
According to the research, paraoxonase 1 or PON1– a protein-coding gene responsible for detoxifying the body– is a lot lower in individuals with autism. The study attributes this to high HCFS intake, which, researchers suggest, is inevitable due to its presence in almost every food being sold on the market.
The research noted that HCFS has a serious adverse effect to human health which deters the elimination of both toxins and heavy metals from the human body. According to the researchers, this is due to the fact that HCFS depletes zinc, a natural mineral responsible for bodily toxin elimination.
The research also noted that HCFS exposes the human body to heavy metals such as mercury (Hg)– ingestion of which has been proven to have a profound effect in children’s neurodevelopment.
The study, which was published in the journal Clinical Epigenetics in 2012, is only one of the many researches that holds man-made toxins directly responsible for autism in children.
